John Byrne’s acclaimed contemporary comedy classic – one of the defining works of 20th century Scottish theatre –catches the vibrant idiom of a generation. Laughter, humanity,
hope: a sparkling and virile play.
Paisley 1957. Friday in the slab room of A.F.Stobo & Co (Carpet Manufacturers). Three slab boys should be grinding powder for the paint slabs. But Spanky and Phil prefer shooting
the breeze and making weedy Hector the butt of their jokes. They toil away: strutting, skiving and keeping ahead of Old Man Curry.
But they are all planning their escape. Home is hard and the future bleak. Phil, a talented natural artist, son of demented Mrs McCann, dreams of a world outside the factory walls and a place
at art school.
John Byrne will be present for a post-show Q & A session: date to be announced.
